UPDATE: The auction netted over $7,000 toward Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. In all, Bob Parks SMYRNA raised over $9,000.
Many of my colleagues have posted about the upcoming auction our office has planned that will benefit the Relay for Life. All proceeds go for research where we hope a cure for cancer will be found.
Every single person has known someone who has either fought cancer and survived, or fought and lost the battle. We don’t know all causes of cancer – it strikes both infants and the elderly – but we do know that it can be a devastating disease both on the patient and their families. Won’t you take a few moments to read about our auction and make plans to attend? Your support in this would be greatly appreciated.
Bob Parks Realty is hosting a live auction on Thursday, April 24th starting at 5:30 p.m. The location will be Dugger’s Food & Fun in Murfreesboro.(1738 W. Northfield Blvd. Murfreesboro, TN. 37129).
If you are unable to attend and would like to bid on some of the items please let us know and we will make contact with you when the items are up for bid.
Chicken Valenciano
Ingredients
For the Salsa
-
3 navel or Valencia oranges, peeled and segmented
-
1/2 red onion, minced and soaked in 1 cup water, then drained
-
2 scallions, diced
-
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
-
1/4 cup olive oil
-
1 clove garlic, minced
For the chicken
-
6 boneless chicken breasts, lightly pounded, or 6 (7-ouncee) airline chicken breasts**
-
1/4 cup olive oil
-
1 tablespoon kosher salt
-
1 teaspoon cracked pepper
-
1 tablespoon ground cumin
-
12 small red potatoes
Cooking Intructions
-
Make the salsa: In a medium-size bowl, toss together the orange segments, onion, scallion, cilantro, oil, and garlic. Aloow to marinate for 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
-
Make the chicken: Preheat the oven to 400 (degrees) fahrenheit
-
Brush the chicken breasts with 2 tablespoons of the oil and season with salt, pepper, and cumin. Place the batches in a large, heavy ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
-
Cook until well-browned on both sides. Place in the oven and roast until the chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes for boneless breasts, about 20 minutes for airline breasts**. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside, keeping warm.
-
Place the red potatoes and the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in the same skillet, and roast in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden and tender.
-
Slice the boneless chicken breasts and arrange on a serving platter, family style; serve the airline chicken breasts on individual serving plates. Either way, top with the salsa, and garnish with roasted red potatoes.
Special note: An airline breast is a boneless chicken breast with the first wing bone attached.
*Modesty is one of my best qualities. Ha.
** I am not a cook so have no earthly idea what an airline chicken breast is. Hooray! They wrote a special note just for me!
Last week, I completed a course to become a designated Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES). The course was incredibly informative about the needs of aging Americans.
On a personal level, I’ve been working closely with my own parents in finding them a new home. They are in their 80s, so their needs were very different from those of a young couple looking for their first home. We wanted something all on one level, affordable because of limited retirement income, safe neighborhood, minimal outside steps and a level yard with no hidden dangers, open floor plan to allow for walkers or future wheelchairs, wide doorways (same reason), and a garage so they can safely leave their car without the hassle of bad weather.
The course I took addressed all these issues, along with the emotional traumas that seniors go through when looking for a new home. According to the National Association of Realtors:
“Older consumers have special financial and lifestyle considerations when it comes to buying and selling real estate, and it helps to have a Realtor® who understands those needs,” Combs said. “As we bring the SRES designation into the NAR family, our goal is to continue to support Realtors® with training and educational opportunities that evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of real estate consumers.”
Overall, I am so grateful that I took this course because I believe in the long run that I’ll be able to help guide the 55 plus crowd (my own peers, in fact) through what can be a confusing, stressful time in their lives.
Another designation that I have found to be valuable for both my clients and me is the GRI training. After extensive coursework, I am proud to use the following to describe my work as stated by NAR:
The Graduate REALTOR® Institute (GRI) symbol is the mark of a real estate professional who has made a commitment to providing a superior level of professional services by earning the GRI designation. REALTORS® with the GRI designation are highly trained in many areas of real estate to better serve and protect their clients. Learn about other benefits of earning the GRI designation.
I just got back from the old car festival at the Greenfield Village located at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mi. I went with some of my best friends and we took a 1925 model TT fire truck. To say that we had a great time is to say the least. There were approximately 400 cars there from all across the country. The youngest was a 1932 and the oldest was a 1899 steam car. There was a Bugatti there that was given to the museum, valued at a stunning $20,000,000 (that’s 20 MILLION).
During the show the fire truck had a flat tire. Well, to change it was quite an experience. We did it in the middle of the street at the village. I was told that all the spectators thought that it was a demonstration and we had about a hundred spectators looking on. I was so focused at the task at hand that I didn’t know it. I can go on and on about what a great time I had, but the Detroit News put us in their newspaper so you can read about it there! Here’s a link for more details… plus a photo of the fire engine!
